A common question I get asked is, "well, what fish should I feed?" In this article I will be going over the best fish to feed ferrets based on mercury and nutrient levels. To avoid sounding like a broken record, check out why I recommend feeding fish in this post. Omega-3 has many wonderful health benefits for your ferrets...honestly, why aren't you feeding fish at this point...? I feed one meal of fish a week, the best qualities in a fish are as follows:
Before feeding a new fish species I like to check with Fish Choice. Here, you can see whether or not the fish you want to feed is sustainable. There is also the Marine Stewardship Council. When a fishery successfully passes their criteria, they will receive a blue label that can be used on their stock. I'm including a rating system to make things fun! Each fish will be given a star rating for these categories: nutrients, mercury level, sustainability, and ease of sourcing. True sustainability rating is difficult because there are varied opinions out there if a certain fish species is sustainable, I will research and use my best judgement for this rating category.
The Final VerdictI could go over so much more fish species, but that would take forever! I'm sure I'll make more posts reviewing other species in the future. For now, my final verdict is:
Winner: Lake whitefish Runner up: Atlantic mackerel 3rd place: Sardines 4th place: Salmon Again, keep in mind there are so many species of fish out there. This was just for fun, and I'm no fish expert. Rating sustainability is quite difficult as well, I did the best I could with the information I found.
